Officers of the UK will be not able to stop athletes importing steroids to the UK, when they come to participate in the 2012 Olympic Games. However intake of steroids is banned in sports, personal intake of these products is not illegal in the UK. Just sale of steroids is claimed to be illicit in this country. Thus, if someone attempts to import amount of anabolic steroids which is essentially large, he/she will not be allowed to do it.
Before Olympics took place in Australia, Canada and China, governments of these countries changed legislation related to import and application of steroids at least temporally. But the British government refuses to change steroid legislation for the 2012 Olympics.
Ironically, while the British government doesn’t want to make personal usage of steroids criminal, Britain sportspersons are banned for lifetime, if they apply anabolic steroids. As for the WADA Code, sportspeople who take banned medications are banned for two years.
Hugh Robertson, the Olympic minister, notes that it is needed to have a universal law related to sentencing. This minister insists on at least four years or even longer. Although this minister is supported by the British Olympic Association, the UK Anti-Doping Agency doesn’t agree with such harsh sanction. Andy Parkinson, the CEO of the UK Anti-Doping Agency, believes that some sanctions should be milder.
Hugh Robertson realizes that there are different points of view in sports and it’s not well but he doesn’t ask Andy Parkinson to resign.
The spokesman for the minister has noticed that any athlete can have steroids in his/her luggage, when he/she comes to London. But the amount of steroids should display that he/she has them just for personal usage. The spokesperson has noticed that it is not illegal for an athlete to apply steroids under laws of the UK but if any athlete is caught administering forbidden medications, he/she will be punished under anti-doping laws.
The UKAD confirmed that they would cooperate with border control officials. Information about sportspeople will be used by anti-doping officers.
5, 000 drug test, including 1, 000 blood tests will be conducted by the International Olympic Committee.
