Every baseball fan knows that Roger Clemens is accused in obstruction of justice. It is claimed that he has lied before Congress about usage of steroids and HGH.
Rusty Hardin pointed out that Roger Clemens’ physical appearance didn’t change greatly before, during and after his working with the coach Brian McNamee. He claimed that this factor was a proof that Roger Clemens hadn’t taken steroids and other related products.
Appearance of muscles is usually used by prosecutors as proof that a person applied steroids or/and other performance-enhancing drugs. But this tendency was not used during the case against Roger Clemens. No one could confirm that muscles of Roger Clemens manifested that he had taken steroids and HGH. It is one of differences between the cases against Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds.
When it comes to the governmental case against Barry Bonds, federal prosecutors called numerous individuals in the trial who were able to testify that anabolic steroids caused substantial changes in physical appearance of this athlete. They considered that intake of steroids led to increase of muscle mass, enhanced size of the head and testicular shrinkage in Barry Bonds.
So, the defense attorney Rusty Hardin provided 4 photos of Roger Clemens. The pictures were made four different times during the baseball career of Roger Clemens, including the period of time when Clemens was working with the trainer Brian McNamee. The attorney pointed out that the pictures showed that there was no difference in physical changes that could support that he utilized steroids and HGH.
Rusty Hardin noticed that the pictures manifested just the process of ageing. The masseur Cheryl Redfern also claimed that she didn’t observe any changes in physical appearance of Roger Clemens. Roger Clemens experienced neither back acne, nor gynecomastia, nor dramatically increased muscle size.
The former Major League Baseball player Phil Garner also confirmed that there were not any obvious changes in physical appearance and performance of Roger Clemens during working with Brian McNamee.
The Assistant US Attorney Steve Durham tried to discredit the affirmation about lack of physical changes in Roger Clemens during the cross-examination of the former baseball player Phil Garner. He noted that while some steroids increased muscle size, others didn’t promote enhancing muscles. So, he confirmed that the photos could display nothing about steroid use.
Federal prosecutors want to take advantages in both cases: in the case against Roger Clemens and in that against Barry Bonds. While they claim that physical changes in Barry Bonds display that he has administered steroids, lack of physical changes in Roger Clemens doesn’t prove that he hasn’t used steroids.
